Step 1
Show your horse the photoshoot location ahead of time.
This is especially important if your horse is nervous or easily spooked. If they’re unsure about a place, it can take time and reassurance to help them feel comfortable. Visiting beforehand gives them a chance to explore, relax, and be happy in the environment before the big day.
Step 2
Research and practice the poses you’d like captured—
for example, bareback riding, standing, or walking calmly beside you.
If you want to look and feel confident in your photos, it’s best to rehearse any poses or ideas you’d like to try before the photoshoot.
Step 3
Plan your outfit – Consider the background you’ll be photographing in, as well as your horse’s colouring, and choose something that will complement them beautifully.
For example, a stunning grey mare surrounded by wild white garlic looks magical when paired with a floaty white dress—it ties the whole scene together perfectly.
Step 4
Ask for help from friends or family on the day.
The more helping hands we have, the smoother everything will run. Getting those ears forward is a full-time job, so having someone assist makes the whole day far easier and more enjoyable.
Step 5
Give your horse a good clean, including their mane and hooves.
I can edit out small marks—horses aren’t exactly easy to keep spotless—but starting with a clean canvas makes the editing process much quicker, which means you’ll get your photos back sooner. 😉
