How to Prepare for Your Photoshoot: Tips from Your Photographer

Whether it’s a family session, an engagement shoot, or a fun day with the kids/pets — a little preparation goes a long way in helping your photos feel relaxed, natural, and truly you. As your photographer, my goal is to make sure you feel comfortable, confident, and excited before we even start snapping away. So here are my top tips to help you prepare for your photoshoot!

1. Outfits: Choose What Makes You Feel Good

The right outfit doesn’t have to be fancy — it just has to feel like you.

Here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Coordinate, don’t match: Instead of everyone wearing identical colours, choose a colour palette that complements each other. Soft neutrals, pastels, or earthy tones often photograph beautifully and work well with natural backdrops.
  • Think about the setting:
  • Beach or outdoor shoot? Flowy dresses, linen shirts, bare feet, and light fabrics work perfectly.
  • Urban or rustic locations? Denim, textures like knits or leather, and deeper tones can look striking.
  • Woodland or autumnal session? Warm tones like burnt orange, mustard, cream, or forest green blend beautifully with the surroundings.
  • Avoid distractions: Steer clear of large logos, busy patterns, or neon colours — they can take attention away from the emotion and connection in the photos.
  • Bring layers and options: Sometimes a quick outfit change or a jacket swap can give us a whole new look!
  • If you are bringing a horse/pet: Think of their coat colours and how best to complement it.

If you’re unsure what works best, I’m always happy to help plan your outfits — just send me a few photos or ideas, and we’ll style something together that fits your vision.

2. Location

Your photos should feel cohesive, so we’ll always talk about location and background before the shoot.

If you are bringing pets/horses or small children, it may be worth choosing a location they are comfortable in or showing the location before the big day! This helps to make sure everyone is relaxed and comfortable on the photoshoot.

A lot of people like to go to locations that means something to them as a family/couple.

3. What to Expect: A Little Guidance Goes a Long Way

You don’t need to know how to pose — that’s my job! I’ll guide you throughout, with gentle prompts rather than stiff positions.

Some examples:

  • “Walk towards me holding hands and look at each other.”
  • “Whisper something silly in their ear.”
  • “Hold each other like you mean it.”

These little moments help create genuine laughter, connection, and warmth — the kind of photos that truly tell your story.

4. If Kids Are Involved: Make It Fun!

Children bring the best kind of energy — but expecting them to sit still and smile perfectly isn’t realistic (or necessary!). I love to make sessions playful, relaxed, and full of movement.

We might:

  • Play games like “Run to mummy for a big cuddle,” “Who can jump the highest?” or “Let’s look for fairies behind that tree!”
  • Encourage natural interaction — tickles, races, shoulder rides, or exploring the location together.
  • Take breaks: Sometimes little ones need a moment to recharge. Snacks, cuddles, or letting them lead the way always help bring those authentic smiles back.

By keeping things light-hearted, we capture the real moments — the giggles, cuddles, and chaos that make family life so special.

5. Before Your Session

A few quick pre-shoot tips:

  • Get plenty of rest the night before. You’ll feel fresh and happy (and kids will too!).
  • Plan extra time. Arriving early helps everyone settle in and takes away any stress.
  • Feed everyone before. Nothing worse than a hungry husband or child lol!
  • Bring a few essentials: Hairbrush, wipes, water, snacks (for little ones), Treats/toys for pets and anything sentimental you might want to include, like a favourite blanket or toy.
  • Trust the process. The best photos often come from the in-between moments — the laughter after a prompt, the wind in your hair, or the way your partner looks at you when you least expect it.

6. Relax and Enjoy It

The best photos happen when you’re being yourselves. You don’t need to perform or pose perfectly — your connection, love, and personality will shine through naturally. My job is to guide, observe, and capture those beautiful, fleeting moments that you’ll treasure forever.

Final Thoughts

Preparing for your photoshoot doesn’t need to be stressful. With the right outfits, a relaxed mindset, and a bit of fun, your session will feel more like a joyful experience than a formal event. Whether it’s a family adventure, a romantic engagement, or a simple portrait, my goal is always the same: to create images that feel real and true to you.

If you have any questions about what to wear, where to shoot, or how to get your family excited for the day — just ask! I’m always here to help make it easy, fun, and completely unforgettable.
