What to Expect From Your Engagement Shoot – Swansea Wedding Photographer

Your engagement shoot is one of the most exciting parts of your wedding journey. It’s a chance to celebrate this special season, capture your love story, and get comfortable in front of the camera before your big day. As a wedding photographer, I love helping couples create relaxed, natural images in some of the most beautiful spots across South Wales – from the Gower beaches to the rolling Brecon hills. If you’re wondering what to expect, here’s everything you need to know.

A Relaxed and Fun Experience

Unlike the busy atmosphere of a wedding day, your engagement shoot is calm, fun, and focused on the two of you. It’s a chance to enjoy each other’s company, laugh, walk hand-in-hand, and let me capture those natural, candid moments that show your true connection. Most couples are surprised by how much fun the session feels!

Getting Comfortable in Front of the Camera

For many couples, an engagement shoot is their first professional photo session together. Feeling nervous is completely normal – but that’s the beauty of it. It’s your chance to ease into being photographed, learn how I work as your photographer, and feel confident before your wedding day arrives.

Choosing the Perfect Location in Wales

Wales is full of stunning backdrops for engagement photography, my favourite is the Gower. Whether you dream of golden hour at Rhossili Bay, the dramatic cliffs of Three Cliffs, or the charm of Swansea Marina, there are endless options to suit your style.

I always recommend choosing a location that feels personal – maybe where you had your first date, or a place you love to visit together.

Also think about the overall vibe and colour palette you’d love for your photos.

If you’re drawn to soft, neutral tones, the beach can be the perfect choice.

Love rich greens with sunlight filtering through the trees? The woods are ideal.

Take some time to look through your photographer’s portfolio to see which locations best match the style and atmosphere you’re hoping for.

What to Wear

Your outfits should make you feel comfortable and confident. Many couples bring two looks – one casual and one slightly dressier, this adds variety and helps if you have to walk a bit for the location. Neutral or earthy tones work beautifully outdoors, especially against the beaches and countryside of the Gower. The key is to coordinate without being too “matchy.”

Make up

Engagement shoots are a good time to book in your make up trial with your chosen make up artist, try and book in advance as their spaces do fill up quickly!

If you haven't picked your make up or hair artist, I'd be happy to give some recommendations.

Nails

Little details matter- a clean ring and nice nails makes a difference when going in for close ups.

A Great Way to Include Your Dog Or Children

If your dog is part of the family, your engagement shoot is the perfect opportunity to include them! Many couples love bringing their pets along for photos – whether it’s a stroll along Swansea Bay, a playful run on the Gower beaches, or cuddles in the countryside.

Not only do you get gorgeous photos with your four-legged friend, but it’s also a brilliant way to see how they’ll react to being part of your wedding day. Some couples even use their engagement session as a “trial run” for involving their dog in the ceremony or portraits on the big day.

A Sneak Peek Into Your Wedding Photography

Your engagement shoot is a great way for us to work together before your wedding. You’ll see how I photograph, and I’ll get to know you as a couple – making your wedding photos even more personal and natural. It’s like a fun rehearsal for your big day!

When?

Book you session just before sunset or just after sunrise offer the best light.

Want a golden glowy vibe? Go for an hour before sunset, pick somewhere the sun will glisten off like sand dunes or trees rather than direct sky.

Sunrise is also has a lovely glow which is better for sharper images.

Try to avoid booking these in summer as this is wedding photographers busiest season and when beaches/woods will have lots of people visiting.

Natural, Candid Moments

As your photographer, I’ll gently guide you so you feel relaxed in front of the camera, but the magic really comes from authentic moments. Expect to laugh, chat, share a kiss, and simply enjoy being together. The best photos come when you forget about the camera and just be yourselves.

Posing

No posing experience needed! Book a photographer you can relax with, have fun and they’ll guide you naturally.

Movement is key to creating relaxed, natural photos. I’ll give you simple prompts to work with and even play a few fun, light-hearted games (no standing around being posed like models!)
