🎄 How to Prepare Your Horse for Their Christmas Photoshoot

Simple tips to keep your horse calm, comfortable, and looking festive!

Christmas photoshoots with your horse are one of the most magical parts of the season — the cosy colours, the sparkle, the wreaths, and of course… the adorable chaos that horses like to bring to any festive plan!

To help everything run smoothly (and to make sure you get those gorgeous images you’re dreaming of), here are some easy ways to prepare your horse before the big day.

🎁 1. Practise Wearing Something Around Their Neck

Most Christmas shoots include a bauble wreath, ribbon, or festive wreath — and while some horses don’t bat an eyelid, others act like you’ve introduced a whole new species into the world.

A few days before your session, pop something lightweight around their neck during normal grooming or chilling time.

This helps them get used to the feeling of something resting on their chest and moving slightly as they walk.

Short, calm sessions with lots of praise go a long way toward a relaxed, confident horse on the day.

🧘‍♀️ 3. Work on Standing Still

Posing is a skill… even for horses!

A few minutes of practising “stand” makes such a difference.

Try asking for small moments of stillness in different environments — the yard, the field, outside the stable.

This helps your horse learn to settle even if there’s Christmas music, rustling props, or a photographer excitedly telling them they’re beautiful (because they absolutely are).

✨ 4. Clean Hooves If You Want Full-Body Photos

If you’re planning on full-body or action photos, don’t forget the hooves!

A quick clean of shoes or brushing off dried mud can really elevate the final images.

Even if the rest of your horse is sparkling clean, muddy feet draw the eye — and a little hoof TLC keeps the focus on your horse’s gorgeous expression and festive styling.

🧹 5. Prep the Space Around You

You don’t need a fancy location — just a tidy one!

Whether we’re shooting in the barn, near the stable door, or in a favourite corner of the yard, a quick sweep makes all the difference.

Clear away anything that is infront of the barn/stable for black background photos:

Hay piles
Random buckets
Rugs or tack you’ve just used
Wheelbarrows (the classic accidental photobomber)
